Mexico's farmed shrimp production up 40%.

MEXICO CITY, Mar 16, 2004 (Notimex/Corporate Mexico by Internet Securities, Inc. via COMTEX) -- The head of the National Fish Farming and Fishing Commission (Conapesca), Ramon Corral Avila, said that in the recent season, some 61,000 tons of fish-farmed shrimps were produced, an increase of 40% compared to the previous year.

The official underlined that in recent years, production of shrimps in Mexico has been increasing significantly, shown quite clearly by the results for the latest season. Corral Avila stressed the in the face of the strict health norms met by the Mexican shrimp-fishing sector, which are superior even to those in the United States, the authorities north of the border are attempting to meet standards set by Mexico.

According to a statement released by Conapesca, the Mexican shrimp is considered to be one of the best in the world. Corral Avila was in Boston, Massachusetts at the International Fishing Fair to promote the industry abroad, with the full backing of the Mexican Shrimp Council.
