The body of 28-year-old Kate Marie Allen, of West Dapto, was found in Reed Park atDapto by two walkers shortly after 6am yesterday.
Police have not yet said how Ms Allen was killed but a post mortem examination wasbeing held today to determine the cause of death.
Lake Illawarra Crime Manager Danny Sharkey today said detectives hoped security videofootage taken from hotels and businesses in the area would lead them to the killer.
The killer had made no attempt to hide the body which had been stripped and left justmetres from a main road. Her black jacket had been used to cover her face.
The red-headed woman was last seen wearing the jacket and black pants after leaving a party.
Acting Inspector Sharkey said detectives were attempting to track the woman's last movements.
He said she had been out for a night on the town with friends and had visited severallicensed premises, the last of which was the Albion Park Hotel.
She later attended a friend's private party.
"Her last known movements at this stage was at about 3.20am when she was seen to bewalking alone along Bong Bong Street at Dapto,' Inspector Sharkey said.
"She had been at a private party, then they'd all left in a cab and her friends were dropped off.
"They arranged for her to be dropped off, but she decided to get out at Dapto, we'retrying to find out why."
Her body was located in Reed Park about 600 metres from where the taxi had dropped her off.
"We're trying to locate all surveillance footage of business premises in the Daptoarea," Inspector Sharkey said.
Insp Sharkey would not reveal what the cause of death may have been, saying that wassubject to a post mortem examination, which was being held today.
He would not say if there were any visible signs of trauma or whether the murder hadinvolved a sex crime.
It had not yet been established if the woman had been killed on site or not, he said.
"We're just seeking assistance, asking anyone who may have been in the area between3.20am and 6am that day and who may have seen something at all to contact us," Insp Sharkeysaid.
Insp Sharkey said the woman had lived in the area for most of her life, barring a shortstint on the central coast, from which she had recently returned.
Police have appealed for anybody who was near the park between 3.20am and 6.20am tocontact Lake Illawarra detectives on (02) 4295 2699, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
