Vic: Alcoa was warned of cancer risk 10 years ago, report
Aluminium giant Alcoa was reportedly warned at least a decade ago of lethal cancer
risks in its Victorian smelters.
A medical specialist at Melbourne's PETER MACCALLUM cancer hospital sounded alarm bells
over potential cancer dangers in 1989.
Today's Herald Sun newspaper quotes cancer expert Dr CYRIL MINTY warned pot room and
other workers at the Portland and Point Henry smelters could develop the disease.
His comments were included in a report in the The Sun newspaper on May 1, 1989.
This week, Alcoa revealed it had warned 3,000 workers they faced a risk of cancer from
long-term exposure to coal tar pitch, and arranged mass medical checks.
